Custom Deck Design & Construction in Big Sky
Every deck we build starts with the mountain. Your property's elevation, aspect, slope, and proximity to Lone Mountain or the Gallatin River all shape the design. A deck in Mountain Village at 7,500 feet faces different engineering challenges than one in Meadow Village at 6,300 feet, and we design for each.
Decking Materials for Big Sky's Climate
Material choice at elevation determines whether your deck lasts 5 years or 25.
TimberTech AZEK (Most Popular)
Capped polymer decking that handles Big Sky's extremes. The non-porous cap resists moisture penetration during freeze-thaw cycles, and it won't fade under high-altitude UV. We install more AZEK than any other material. It's the best all-around choice for our climate. $12-18/sq ft installed.
Trex Transcend
High-performance composite with realistic wood grain patterns. Strong freeze-thaw resistance and a 25-year fade & stain warranty make it a reliable mid-range option. Works well for Meadow Village homes where snow loads are lower. $10-15/sq ft installed.
Ipe Hardwood (Premium)
Brazilian hardwood with a Janka hardness of 3,680, harder than most stone. Naturally resistant to rot, insects, and UV graying. Ipe is the premium choice for luxury mountain homes in the Yellowstone Club and Spanish Peaks developments. It weathers to a silver patina unless oiled annually. $18-28/sq ft installed.
Western Red Cedar (Traditional)
The classic mountain look. Cedar's natural oils resist decay, and its warm tones complement log and timber-frame architecture. Requires annual sealing in Big Sky's climate. The UV and moisture cycle accelerates weathering faster than in lower-elevation markets. Best for homeowners who enjoy seasonal maintenance as part of mountain living. $8-14/sq ft installed.
Structural Engineering for Mountain Conditions
Every deck we frame is designed to exceed code:
- Snow loads: Gallatin County requires 60+ PSF ground snow load rating. We typically design to 80-100 PSF depending on roof exposure and drifting patterns.
- Frost depth: All footings extend below the 48-inch frost line. Non-negotiable at our elevation.
- Wind uplift: Mountain Village and ridge-top properties face sustained winds. We use hurricane clips and through-bolted connections.
- Seismic: Montana falls in Seismic Design Category B. Our framing connections account for lateral loads.
Deck Styles We Build
Multi-Level Decks. Big Sky's terrain often demands it. We turn steep grades into multi-tier living spaces with separate zones for dining, lounging, and hot tub placement.
Wraparound Decks. Popular on Meadow Village homes where views extend from the Spanish Peaks to Lone Mountain. We design continuous railing and seamless transitions around corners.
Covered Deck Structures. Pergolas and roof extensions that provide shade in summer and reduce snow accumulation in key areas. Popular for hot tub enclosures.
Ski-Adjacent Decks. Mountain Village chalets need decks that handle ski boot traffic, equipment storage, and après-ski entertaining. We use textured surfaces and commercial-grade drainage systems.
Railing Systems
We install cable rail and glass panel systems. Big Sky homeowners invest in views, and picket railings block them. Our cable rail installations use marine-grade stainless steel tensioned to code with top rails in aluminum, steel, or wood.
